Hey there, Paul ! Really interesting - especially for the dormant SF geek in me (it's kinda hard to find English reading matter in Taiwan).

Talking of gear, I'm looking at the brand new Zoom H4 to replace my minidisk for field recordings - I'm really bummed that I can't transfer recordings from my 3 year old MD digitally. The H4 is not as stealth as your rig, but it can record 24-bit/96 kHz wavs - great for music production.

I used an iRiver IFP-799 solid state MP3 player/recorder with an external microphone from Giant Squid Audio Labs.

Steve Eley from Escape Pod turned me on to the Giant Squid. It's a great mic for the iRiver and similar devices. The mic has 2 omni heads on 6' long cables. Each head has a clip so it can be attached to stuff.

I stuffed the excess cable into my shirt, then clipped one mic on the guest while keeping the other mic for myself. The iRiver was strapped to my upper arm with the sports strap that comes with it. The rig is very stealth, it's hard to see in person, let alone in pictures. You can see a picture of the rig here.
